Lighting Up the Holidays
An unforgettable holiday for two American heroes at the happiest place on Earth.
The holiday lighting events at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts are an annual tradition, but the 2015 events held even more significance. Disneyland was celebrating its 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee, and WDW was preparing to light the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights for the last time. Siemens, who sponsors the display at WDW and the “it’s a small world holiday” overlay at Disneyland, chose two special military veterans to turn on the displays and turned to Mindfile to help them commemorate these events.
In a whirlwind week of bi-coastal shoots video and still shoots, our team gathered first in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, to meet Kristie Helmuth and her family as they enjoyed a day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, culminating with the flip of a switch that transformed the Streets of America with millions of dancing lights. A few days later, it was off to Anaheim, California, to capture Sgt. Juan Valdez, his wife, and his service dog, Midas, as they toured Disneyland and flipped the switch to turn on the holidays at It’s a Small World. Talk about heroes- these veterans showed all of us what’s really important this holiday season. Our team pulled out the Go-Pros for this one, ensuring we captured all of the angles as the Streets of America and Downtown Disneyland as they lit up the skies. An added bonus- working with Midas, the dog, who proved not only a stellar service dog but camera savvy as well.
